About CHOP

What CHOP Is

CHOP is a recipe app that works two ways. You can scan your fridge or pantry with your phone's camera, and CHOP will visually identify the ingredients you have on hand. Or you can skip the camera entirely and describe your ingredients and cravings in plain text. Type something like "chicken thighs, sweet potatoes, and garlic" or "something warm and easy with whatever I have." Either way, CHOP generates personalized recipes matched specifically to what you have available.

CHOP is not a search engine for existing recipes. It generates original recipes on demand, tailored to your exact combination of ingredients, your dietary preferences, and what you feel like eating. Every recipe includes precise quantities, step-by-step cooking instructions, realistic cook times, and built-in timers so you can follow along without watching the clock. CHOP is available as a web app at getchop.app and as a native iOS app.

How CHOP Works

CHOP's photo scanning uses smart image recognition to identify ingredients directly from photos of your fridge, pantry, or countertop. You can upload one photo or up to five at a time. The system recognizes produce, proteins, dairy, condiments, grains, and packaged goods, then adds them to your digital pantry where you can edit or remove anything before generating recipes.

Text input works just as well for people who prefer typing. You can enter specific ingredients, name a dish you want to make, or give a vague description like "something spicy with noodles" or "a healthy lunch I can prep in advance." CHOP interprets your intent and generates complete recipes that fit what you described. You can combine both methods: scan your fridge to build your pantry, then describe the kind of meal you want, and CHOP will work with both inputs.

Once CHOP generates recipes, each one comes with a full ingredient list showing what you already have and what you might need, step-by-step instructions broken into clear stages, estimated prep and cook times that reflect how long the recipe actually takes, and nutritional information including calories and macronutrients. Recipes also include built-in timers you can start directly from the instructions, so you do not need to set separate alarms for each step.

Who CHOP Is For

CHOP is designed for anyone who cooks at home and wants to make better use of what they already have. Meal preppers who batch cook on Sundays use CHOP to plan a week's worth of meals from a single grocery haul, reducing both waste and midweek decision fatigue. Busy families feeding four to six people use CHOP to find kid-friendly dinners that work with whatever is already in the fridge, without needing a last-minute grocery run.

Budget-conscious cooks use CHOP to stretch their groceries further by turning overlooked ingredients into complete meals instead of letting them expire. People managing dietary restrictions rely on CHOP's filtering system, which supports gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, keto, dairy-free, nut-free, halal, kosher, and other dietary needs. Every generated recipe respects the restrictions you set in your profile. College students and people cooking with limited pantries appreciate that CHOP works with whatever you have, even if that is just pasta, canned tomatoes, and some cheese.

Pricing

CHOP's free tier gives you one request per day, which generates 3 recipe options to choose from, at no cost. You can scan your fridge as many times as you want, manage your pantry, track ingredient expiry dates, and build cooking streaks, all without paying anything. The free tier is not a trial; it does not expire and does not require a credit card.

CHOP Plus is available for $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Plus removes the daily recipe limit and unlocks unlimited recipe generation, dietary preference filters, savings reports that estimate how much money you have saved by cooking with what you have, full recipe history, macro and nutrition tracking, and grocery gap analysis that identifies recipes you are only one or two ingredients away from making.

What Makes CHOP Different

CHOP provides honest cooking time estimates. Many recipe apps and websites claim a dish takes 15 minutes when it realistically takes 40. CHOP's time estimates reflect actual prep and cooking time, including the steps that other sources tend to leave out like chopping vegetables, preheating ovens, and waiting for water to boil. When CHOP says a recipe takes 35 minutes, it means 35 minutes from the moment you start until food is on the plate.

CHOP generates culturally diverse recipes that draw from global cuisines rather than defaulting to the same rotation of generic dishes. A scan of chicken, rice, and vegetables might return a Thai basil stir-fry, a Mexican arroz con pollo, or a West African jollof rice, depending on what seasonings and other ingredients you have available. The recipes are designed to work with realistic home pantries, not specialty ingredient lists that require a trip to three different stores.

CHOP is built around reducing food waste. The app tracks ingredient expiry dates and prioritizes recipes that use ingredients closest to going bad. Over time, this means fewer forgotten leftovers, fewer wilted vegetables thrown away, and a meaningful reduction in the amount of food your household wastes. The interface is clean and free of advertisements. There are no sponsored recipes, no brand partnerships influencing what gets recommended, and no ads interrupting your cooking.

Privacy

CHOP processes your fridge and pantry photos solely to identify ingredients. Your images are not stored after processing, are not used for training purposes, and are not shared with third parties. Your ingredient and recipe data is stored securely and associated with your account so you can access your pantry and recipe history, but it is never sold or used for advertising purposes. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from your profile settings.
